Spicy Poondu (Garlic) Kuzhambu

  • 1 cup peeled fresh garlic gloves
  • 2 medium size chopped tomatoes
  • tamarind (lemon sized) extract juice using 2 cups of water
  • 1 tsp salt (as per taste)
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp jaggery or sugar (optional)
For tempering
  • 2 tsp cooking oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • pinch of asafoetida
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 8 to 10 methi seeds
  • 1 tsp channa dal

Poondu kuzhambu is a delicious, spicy south indian dish that can go with plain white rice, idli, and dosai. Garlic has lots of benefits for your body!!!.

Instructions

  • in a pan, add and heat cooking oil
  • add mustard seeds and wait until it sputters
  • add methi seeds and channa dal, let it turn slightly brown
  • add curry leaves and asafoetida
  • add garlic and saute until it turns light brown color
  • add chopped tomatoes, chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt
  • add tamarind juice
  • boil for 10 minutes on medium high or until the gravy is thick (Viscous liquid state)
  • add jaggery to enhance the taste
Tips & Tricks
  • soak tamarind in hot water to extract the juice easily
  • adding jaggery or sugar will enhance the taste of the dish
  • if gravy is thick add hot water to adjust the consistency
  • if gravy is watery add 1 tsp of rice flour with 3 tsp of water and make a paste and mix with gravy

Step by Step Instructions

  1. in a pan heat cooking oil and add mustard seeds, methi seeds, channa dal, curry leaves and asafoetida

  2. add garlic and saute until it turns light brown color

  3. add chopped tomatoes, chilli powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder and salt

  4. add tamarind juice

  5. boil for 10 minutes on medium high or until the gravy is thick (semi solid state)

  6. enjoy with plain white rice, idli, and dosai.!!
