Vermicelli Upma

  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 2 tsp urad dal
  • 2 tsp channa dal
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 5 slit green chillies
  • 1 tsp shredded ginger
  • 1 and 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 cups of roasted vermicelli
  • 1/2 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/2 cup chopped beans
  • 1/2 cup chopped potatoes
  • 1/2 cup frozen peas
  • 1/2 cup chopped cabbage
  • 2 tbsp chopped cilantro
  • 6 cups water

Upma recipes are very common in many South Indian households and are mainly prepared as breakfast recipes. Semiya Upma is an Indian breakfast dish, where vermicelli is cooked along with vegetables.

Instructions

  • in a pan add 3 tbsp cooking oil and add mustard
  • once mustard seeds have sputtered add urad dal, channa dal, green chillies and curry leaves
  • fry until both dals are turns light brown
  • add slit green chillies, ginger, cabbage and fry until cabbage turns transparent
  • add chopped veggies, 1/2 tsp salt and mix well
  • close the lid and cook for 5 minutes on medium low flame
  • open the lid and mix veggies, and add 6 cups of water and remaining 1 tsp salt
  • close the lid again and let it boil
  • once water is boiled add vermicelli and mix well
  • cook until vermicelli is cooked (about 10 minutes on medium flame)
  • turn off the stove and add chopped cilantro
  • yummy upma is ready which can be served with coconut chutney!!!!!
Tips & Tricks
  • use heavy bottom pan to avoid burning the upma
  • increase the taste add 2 tsp coconut oil
