Paruppu Adai

IngredientsServings: 4

  • 3 tbsp cooking oil
For Soaking
  • 1/4 cups toor dal
  • 1/4 cup channa dal
  • 1/2 cup moong dal
  • 1/4 cup Mung bean
  • 2 tsp salt ( as per taste)
  • 1/2 cup rice (preferably brown rice)
Prep work
  • soak all the lentils together with rice for 4 hours
For Grinding
  • soaked lentils
  • 10 pieces whole red chillies
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 1/4 tsp asafoetida
  • 2 cloves peeled garlic (optional)
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds

Paruppu adai is a delicious healthy south indian breakfast/tiffin item that can go with coconut chutney, aviyal, idli podi, jaggery syrup, or curd. It is a protein rich dish.

Instructions

  • wash the soaked lentils thoroughly and drain the water
  • in a blender add all the soaked lentils, 10 whole red chillies pieces, 1 sprig curry leaves, 1/4 tsp asafoetida, 2 cloves peeled garlic (optional), 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 cup water and grind (DON'T grind it too fine paste) it as a batter
  • the batter should be in pancake batter consistency
  • in a dosai pan (flat pan) scoop one big laddle of batter and spread it thin round
  • drizzle/pour oil around outside the round
  • let it cook until the color turns medium brown in medium high flame for about 1 minute
  • flip the adai with flat laddle
  • let it cook for 1 minute
  • remove from pan and repeat the step 4 as many as adai you want
Tips & Tricks
  • use lukewarm water to soak lentils which will speed up the soaking process
  • add water to change consistency if needed while grinding (batter should be in dosai batter consistency)
  • chop garlic cloves before adding it to the blender

Step by Step Instructions

  1. wash the soaked lentils thoroughly and drain the water

  2. in a blender add all the soaked lentils

  4. batter should be in dosai batter consistency

  5. in a dosai pan (flat pan) scoop one big laddle of batter and spread it thin round, drizzle/pour oil around outside the batter

  6. flip the adai with flat ladle, let it cook for 1 minute

  7. healthy paruppu adai is ready, and enjoy it with coconut chutney, aviyal, idli podi, jaggery syrup, or curd!!
